Long Tubes
Sometimes a longer G-tube is used instead of a low-profile button. These tubes are also placed surgically and held in place either with stitches or with a balloon.
For some long G-tubes, a retention disc is placed on the outside of the tube so that it rests against the skin. When both the balloon inside the stomach and the disc outside are positioned correctly, the tube stays secure.
Another type is the mushroom gastrostomy tube. This is a soft latex tube with a mushroom-shaped end that sits inside the stomach. It is usually secured with stitches and a large circular dressing called a Hollister® dressing, which locks the tube in place.
In some cases, a surgeon may first place a mushroom tube, and once the opening (tract) between the skin and stomach has healed, it may be replaced with a low-profile button G-tube.
