Giving Medications or Flushing a PEG

Prepare the supplies
– Wash your hands with soap and water.
– Fill a syringe with the amount of water recommended by your healthcare provider.
– Have medications ready in liquid form (or crushed/dissolved if your provider instructed).

Attach the syringe
– Open the medication port or feeding port at the end of the G-tube.
– Attach the tip of the syringe securely to the port.
– Flush with water first
– Slowly push the water into the tube to clear it.
– If the flush goes in easily, continue to the next step.

Give the medication
– Place the medication syringe on the port.
– Slowly push the medication into the tube.
– Clamp the tube between each medication and flush to prevent backflow or leakage.

Flush after medications
– After all medications are given, flush the tube again with water.
– This helps keep the tube clear and prevents blockage.

Finish up
– Remove the syringe.
– Close the cap tightly.
– If the tube is not being used for feeding, leave it capped.
